Approximately 80,000 homeless sleep on the streets of Los Angeles every night.
Los Angeles is the homeless capital of the nation.
25% are women and at least 10,000 are youth under the age of 18.
These two groups routinely fall victim to prostitution and abuse. HIV/AIDS and other diseases are constant threats. The homeless shelters are in an urgent time right now. Shelters across LA are at capacity while the demand for their services continues to go unmet.
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has launched a ground-breaking citywide canvassing campaign to help eradicate homelessness by raising support for nonprofit homeless charities and building awareness in the community about the crisis of homelessness in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Coalition was founded June of 2005, and in this short time has raised over Two Million Dollars to build new shelters in Los Angeles, specifically benefiting homeless women and children.
LAHSC has three distinct goals: Educating the community about the problem of homelessness here in L.A. County, why we are the homeless capital and what they can do to change it. Second goal is public policy awareness, working to change the face of homeless aid in California by securing more funding for homeless rehabilitative services, affordable housing and getting most of the homeless in L.A. permanently off the street. And third, raise resources for shelters in L.A. County to link volunteers, clothes, food and all in-kind donations with Homeless Services that need them across the County.
The coalition was formed in union between various homeless services organizations in L.A. Its two lead organizations, Democracy For Change and the Los Angeles Youth Network, have joined together to build awareness for the growing epidemic and raise resources so they can continue to meet the demands of the homeless community while working on permanent long term change to help eradicate homelessness.
We would like to thank our special community partners for their relentless help!
Currently, all donations made to LAHSC are directly given to our Coalition Partner, Los Angeles Youth Network, to aid them in their services and help in the building of a fourth shelter. LAYN allocates 93% of their funds directly to their services, and 7% is spent on overhead (management & fundraising). Click here to view Form IRS 990 YEAR 2006.
